Apple’s first update for iOS 27 has arrived today and it takes care of a bug that may have made some fans think twice about buying the iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max.
iOS 27.0.1 is here today to nix the bug that caused the new phones to freeze and reboot following a failed effort to use Face ID to authenticate identity or access to an app. In the release notes for today’s update – which comes two weeks after iOS 27 arrived for iPhone users of multiple generations – Apple leads with the resolution for the Face ID bug, but it also takes care of a notifications bug that causes the touchscreen to play-up.
The release notes read:
- iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max may unexpectedly restart when Face ID fails to authenticate.
- A color artifact may appear on photos captured at 2x under certain lighting conditions at f/1.48 on a small number of iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max devices.
- Opening Notification Center and Control Center simultaneously may cause the touchscreen to become unresponsive.
Late last week, Apple confirmed to the media that the issue wasn’t hardware based, which must have been a relief to all parties. While some users were informed by Apple support they’d picked up a dud unit, the most likely culprit for the ‘panic resets’ always appeared to be a software flaw.
The update will be a relief to iPhone 18 Pro early adopters who may have feared the hardware was responsible for the Face ID bug. Given the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max sibling are the first ever Apple handsets to place the infrared camera sensor underneath the display, hardware flaws could have been a massive issue for Apple too.
