You’ll have to bear with me if there are typos in this piece. But I’m smashing out words while deftly avoiding airborne pink animals and listening to reports about hell freezing over. And that’s because Apple has reduced the price of a product by over 50%.
Yes, you read that right. We’ve had months of wallet-punching agony as AI eats the tech world, forcing even industry giants to hike prices. And that includes Apple.
But the company is now fighting against such horrors, because a product’s price has been sliced in half (more, in fact), while the product itself has not. The new Apple Polishing Cloth costs just $9/£9 – less than half the price of its predecessor. And if you’re narrowing your eyes and pulling your best “I am sceptical” face, this isn’t shrinkflation. According to a handy Reddit thread, the revamped cloth is about the same size as the older one yet also softer. So this is an Apple upgrade that costs way less money!
As ever, it would be remiss of the super soaraway Stuff not to lob specs your way. Unfortunately, Apple doesn’t provide any.
Cut from the same cloth
What we know for sure is that the cloth comes pre-folded with a very obvious crease – Let’s hope that’s not the case with the iPhone Ultra on 9 September, eh‽ – and is made from “soft, non-abrasive material”, which you can use to clean “any Apple display, including nano-texture, safely and effectively”.
Although, really? Because Apple’s compatibility list only stretches back to the iPhone 5, the 5th-gen iPad and 2014-era iMacs. So if used on an older device, does the new Polishing Cloth turn into sandpaper, while your device screams “It’s too late for me! Find love with a newer Apple device!” – or worse? I’m also assuming the new, lower price is down to the Polishing Cloth not yet needing to run Siri AI and be packed with RAM.
Savour that, because one day you could be staring at Apple Polishing Cloth Pro, priced at $500/£500, and Apple gear having Siri bellow “NON-APPLE CLEANING CLOTH DETECTED!” if you have the sheer audacity to wipe a spot of dust off a device’s screen with your sleeve.
Still, well done, Tim Cook. If this is your CEO swansong, you’re going out on a high. I only regret it came too late for the mag’s top 50 Apple products feature, because a $9/£9 polishing cloth would surely have been great material for the list.
