Apple introduced the iPhone Duo during its ‘surprise and shine’ event on September 9 and, although the foldable wasn’t a surprise, the support for Apple Pencil wasn’t on everyone’s bingo card.
From later this year, Apple said its first-gen foldable will support Apple Pencil input on both the outer display and the inner display. Until now, the Apple Pencil has only worked on the company’s iPad displays and for gestures on Apple Vision Pro. However, given the 7.6-inch inner display on the iPhone Duo is very much iPad-like it makes sense to include support.
Apple says users will need the most recent USB-C version of the Apple Pencil to access the functionality but from there, those splashing out on the device will be able to take notes, sketch or mark up documents on both displays.
That could be fabulous news for artists who like to draw, paint and create art through apps like Procreate. That has been available on iPhone for a while now, but it’s possible we’ll see developers expand the availability of iPad-only apps too.
The feature isn’t launching alongside the iPhone Duo on October 23, but will be available “later this year”. That suggests Apple still has a bit of work to complete integration and we’ll get it in iOS 27.1 or something before the year is out.
Given Samsung has long offered S-Pen support on its foldables, it makes sense for Apple to follow suit here. We’re glad this feature made the cut.
