The next Call of Duty game has been confirmed with Modern Warfare 4 arriving this autumn, but the big news is that the Nintendo Switch 2 is back in the game.
It’s the first mainline Call of Duty game to release on the Nintendo platform since 2013’s Call of Duty: Ghosts on the Wii U. So this is 13 years in the making.
The new game will be built natively for the Switch 2 with help from the mobile-focused studio Digital Legends, which suggests there’ll be differences between this game and the version coming to Xbox Series S|X, PS5 and PC.
This is also the first mainline Call of Duty game in well over a decade not to be available on PS4 and Xbox One, making it an exclusive current-gen title.
In terms of the Switch 2 version, it means Microsoft has made good on its commitment to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo machines back in 2022.
When trying to get its purchase of Call of Duty proprietor Activision Blizzard over the line, Microsoft entered into a ten-year deal with Nintendo to gain favour with regulators looking to scupper the deal.
The game itself promises to be more of the same high octane FPS action with Activision Blizzard detailing the plot, campaign, multiplayer and DMZ details today.
“War erupts on the Korean Peninsula as North Korea launches a full-scale invasion that threatens to destabilise the world in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4,” the synopsis reads. “A young squad of South Korean soldiers fights to survive on the collapsing front lines, while half a world away a vengeful Captain Price wages a personal war from the shadows as he stays one step ahead of those hunting him. As Price’s off-book mission collides with the forces behind the invasion, the war spreads beyond anyone’s control.”
