Govee is really getting its glow on for this year’s IFA show. The smart lighting expert has no fewer than three new launches – each apparently stuffed with as many AI smarts as they are colour-changing LEDs. Because not even light bulbs can escape artificial intelligence, apparently.
The headline act is the Sky Ceiling Light, which is finally ready for public consumption after making its debut back in January at CES. If you need a refresher, it’s the next best thing to cutting a hole in your ceiling for a better view of the outside world, with custom LEDs that cover a more precise colour spectrum as they transition from bright daytime blues to warm sunset oranges. The firm reckons its 478nm sky-blue spectrum wavelength is great for your natural body clock. It has also been given the TÜV Rheinland seal of approval for low-glare and flicker-free performance.
Each circular installation has extra illumination around the edge to give your ceiling a glow as well as what’s below, with a bright 5200 lumens (at a 6500K colour temperature) being plenty to light any room in the average house. It’s a bit of a heavyweight at 8kg and will need wiring into your lighting circuit, so installation is a bit more involved than Govee’s typical lineup.
Otherwise it’s packing all the usual smart home integrations (including Samsung SmartThings, which is a fairly new addition for Govee kit) and yes, you can command Govee’s AI Lighting Bot 2.0 chatbot to mix up the colours to suit your mood.
Govee also used this year’s IFA to unveil a new generation of strip light – arguably the firm’s bread and butter in its early days – which packs in more LEDs per meter than any rival. You get a whopping 1344 of the things here, along with 16 controllers telling them how to shine – Govee reckons the combo delivers a “flawlessly smooth” colour output in both single- and multi-colour modes, with zero illumination hotspots.
Expect a wide 1,000K–10,000K colour temperature range and highly accurate hues on account of the Color Rendering Index (CRI) of 92. Voice or text prompts sent to the AI Lighting Bot 2.0 can then personalise and animate the strip without you having to find a suitable preset first.
The step-down COB Strip Light 2 is more of the same, just a little simpler – and for less cash. Each kit runs to five meters, or plenty long enough to jazz up a room.
The Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 Pro, meanwhile, are the first of their kind with dual-layer illumination; each light unit has two independently controlled IC chips, letting you bathe your house or garden in two separate light zones at once. Basically more colours with fewer bulbs – though you’ll still need to break out the ladder to install them in the first place.
Naturally they’re weather resistant, come in your choice of 100ft and 200ft lengths, and include independent control Y connectors so different branches of lights can have entirely different colours and effects. That last one should make for some impressive installations for those willing to spend some time with Govee’s extensive companion app – or leave it up to AI to sort.
All three new launches will be on sale in the USA this month, via Amazon and direct from Govee, but only the Sky Ceiling Light and COB Strip Light 2 duo will also be available in Europe. The Sky Ceiling light will set you back $400/€399; the COB Strip Light 2 Pro will cost $170/€180; and the COB Strip Light 2 $100/€120. The Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 Pro will retail for $500 in a 100ft version or $800 for a 200ft reel.
