Google may have opted against launching next-generation Pixel Buds Pro 3 wireless earbuds this year, judging by a new leak in the build up to next month’s Made By Google event.
The erstwhile leaker Evan Blass – some might even refer to him as an OG – today published a rather delightfully coloured pair of Google earbuds when revealing the Pixel 11 Pro Fold.
Great news, right? Well, as 9to5Google points out, aside from the lovely shade of subtle green to match the phone, it appears to be completely identical to the Pixel Buds Pro 2.
Damn. So all we’re getting is a new colour this year? Well it certainly looks that way. Of course it’s possible Google is making no aesthetic changes and still launching a new generation, but it doesn’t not appear that way right now.
However, we were actually expecting a new version this year, given Google has been releasing new buds on a bi-annual cycle. Pixel Buds Pro landed in 2022, the second generation two years later. Last year got a new colour and it appears we’re on track for the same this season too. It’s possible Google offers a slew of new features via software updates that’ll make the mean green model seem new?
The Pixel Buds Pro 2 were dubbed a “sensational sequel” in Stuff’s 2024 review. Our reviewer awarded them a five-star score and judged that: “You don’t need a Pixel phone to appreciate Google’s new earphones. The Pixel Buds Pro 2 are wonderfully comfortable, fully-featured, and sound great – while staying competitive on price.”
Maybe Google believes an update isn’t necessary right now. Google’s event is on August 12. The company is planning to release the Pixel 11 series, along with a Pixel Watch 5 that also doesn’t appear to have a noticeable design change in the works.
The biggest update to the Pixel 11 is likely to be the camera bar and the new spinning multicoloured ball that may be Google’s interpretation of the Nothing Glyph Bar, but also may have links to Google Gemini functionality.
