Meta’s latest efforts to prevent wearers of their smart glasses using the cameras to be creepy perverts involve an outright ban from Instagram.
The social media giant says it is dropping the axe on people secretly filming others without their consent, in order to make content. You know the type of s*** we’re talking about here, right? Those idiot influencers who’ll treat people like garbage in public in the hope of provoking a reaction? Those guys.
There’s also those videos of creepy men filming their conversations with women. There was this dude at a weekly running club I was going to who was pulling that stunt too. Had a Steve Cram perm. Dated reference there.
Anyway, Meta says that if you’re gonna be behaving like that, then you can’t post it on their platforms. Just the hundreds of others that are out there when it’s not their problem any more.
The word comes from Instagram boss Adam Mosseri, who recently said on Instagram: “If you’re posting content that is taking advantage of people and harassing them, like a lot of these pickup line kinds of videos that we’ve heard of and seen, then we’re going to take the content down.
“We don’t want people to be surreptitiously taking videos of other people and harassing them and then posting them on our platform.”
The move comes amid recent pushback against Meta for failing to safeguard the general public against smart glasses users with ill intentions. Just this month it clamped down on those who were tampering with or taping over the LED light that shows when imagery is being captured.
Still, it’s getting harder and harder to shake the label “pervert glasses”. It’ll probably take Apple entering the market and finding some suave marketing language around it. In the mean time we’ll just continue telling that loser at the run club to point his peepers elsewhere.
