Times are tough in the smartphone world, especially for Android smartphone manufacturers. OnePlus has called it quits in the US and Europe, and Nothing recently cancelled the planned CMF Phone 3 Pro because of the RAM crisis.
However, Nothing isn’t planning to bow out according to a co-founder who pushed back against a report saying the company was planning to exit 12 global markets due to declining shipments. The report from Indian outlet Digit claimed the new Nothing Phone (4b) had sold under 20,000 in its short time on sale and, as a result of falling sales, 40,000 layoffs were on the cards.
Nothing’s co-founder Akis Evangelidis called the report ‘fake news’, claiming there’d be no exiting of markets. He revealed sales of the phone in question were actually above 29,000 and, apparently, that’s pretty good going for the category. He does seem to admit that at least some layoffs are happening, but says the figure quoted by the report is “overblown.”
He writes on X: “We are not shutting down any markets. Inaccurate reports are being circulated; Phone (4b) sold 29,537 units on Day 1 only, breaking records in its price segment. What we are doing is reorganising our teams to prepare for our next phase of growth. We are introducing dedicated business units – including an AI-native business unit – and consolidating individual countries into regional hubs to operate much more efficiently. These changes have impacted certain positions, and while we are unable to share specific details due to regulatory compliance and ongoing local consultation processes, the reported numbers are way overblown.”
Incidentally, the reporter who wrote the story claims Nothing was given a full week to rebut and chose to offer no statement or deny anything expressed in the report.
The reporter, Siddharth Chauhan wrote on X: “We gave your team the entire week to respond to our findings. They had no official statement to offer and denied nothing we reported. Digit stands by its story.”
