iOS 27 could cut off support for these classic iPhone models

When Apple announces its new version of iOS every year, it usually signals the end of the road for some legacy iPhone and iPad models where, we’re led to believe, the software has outgrown the capabilities of the hardware.

This year and iOS 27 is likely to be no different. We usually find out about the official compatibility list in the immediate aftermath of the WWDC keynote, but one leaker reckons they have the jump on Apple’s reveal.

According to known leaker Instant Digital (via MacRumors), Apple will shift the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max and the iPhone SE (2nd generation) into the archive section, leaving them stranded on iOS 26. It won’t be the end of the road entirely, with security updates expected for a couple of years after support for new software updates officially ends.

The iPhone 11 models arrived in September 2019, so they’ve had a solid seven-year run. They were the last mainline iPhone models to deploy the super-thin iPhone 6-style design before the iPhone 12 refreshed things somewhat. The iPhone SE 2 arrived six months later carrying an earlier hardware blueprint last seen on the iPhone 5S model.

The compatibility list is not confirmed yet. We’ll know on Monday June 8 when Apple completes the WWDC 26 keynote and launches the beta versions of the new operating system in the immediate aftermath. We’ll let you know when the situation becomes clear.
