iOS 27 could support Google Cast as well as AirPlay and that’s great news for everyone

Apple is reportedly planning to open up to casting technologies beyond AirPlay as native options for iOS 27. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is responding to the latest interoperability regulations from the European Union that could require the company to welcome over streaming protocols into the fold.

That could mean users will be able to select Google Cast, for example, as their preferred casting solution, rather than simply offering AirPlay. This would be similar to Apple offering options to choose default apps for navigation and web browsing where you can choose the default in the settings.

While Apple has opened up AirPlay to more television and audio manufacturers like Samsung, Sonos and LG, but that relies on support from hardware manufacturers to dance to Apple’s tune. If, for instance, Google Cast was available within iOS 27, it would be much easier for the TV and speaker owners across the spectrum to connect from their iPhone, Mac or iPad in a click or two. It could also be handy for iPhone owners visiting hotels, for instance, where they’re away from their familiar hardware.

Gurman reports in his most recent Power On wewsletter (via 9to5Mac): “Apple, looking to satisfy the latest requirements of the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, is building support into iOS 27 for third-party AirPlay streaming alternatives, I’m told. This means that outside services — such as Google Cast — can be set by users as the default solution for beaming video, photos and audio from an Apple device to a speaker or TV.”

iOS 27 is likely to be revealed at WWDC 2026 in a couple of weeks. The OS will be out in September is historical precedent is followed.
