Earlier this week we brought word from a select few iPhone 18 Pro users who were experiencing impromptu reboots after attempting to use Face ID to authenticate apps.
While some users were informed by Apple support they’d picked up a dud unit, the most likely culprit for the ‘panic resets’ always appeared to be a software flaw. Apple has now confirmed that’s the case.
An Apple representative told 9to5Mac that the issue will be resolved in a future software update that’ll be made available next week. Reading between the lines, we’d imagine this will be the iOS 27.0.1 update on the way imminently.
The issue didn’t affect all users, far from it, but appeared to be triggered by a second attempt to use Face ID to access an app following a failed first attempt.
The update will be a relief to iPhone 18 Pro early adopters who may have feared the hardware was responsible for the Face ID bug. Given the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max sibling are the first ever Apple handsets to place the infrared camera sensor underneath the display, hardware flaws could have been a massive issue for Apple too. Hopefully the software fix arrives promptly and everything is resolved with a quickness.
Interestingly, Apple has released a watchOS 27.0.1 update to fix an issue where it’s latest Apple Watch models (Series 12 and Ultra 4) were randomly restarting too.
