Meta’s efforts to shed the ‘pervert glasses’ reputation earned by some less scrupulous wearers of its smart glasses are being undermined by perverts finding loopholes.
No soon had the company behind the Meta Ray-Ban and Oakley Meta Vanguard glasses closed the loophole that enabled people to cover or disable the LED light and still record video, determined wearers found a way around that too – start then recording, then cover the LED light. Probably should have thought about that one, lads.
Meta has now addressed this loophole, according to Alex Himel, who is the VP of Meta’s augmented reality dept.. In a post on Threads (via Engadget) he wrote: “The camera won’t start recording if the LED is blocked, but some people try to bypass this by starting a recording and then covering it up. A fix for this is starting to roll out – the camera will now stop working if the light is covered during a recording.”
“We’re going to keep rolling out updates like this to make sure the capture LED can reliably alert bystanders when photos or videos are being captured for someone’s gallery. Only a tiny minority of people try to get around these protections, and the fact they have to go to these lengths shows our efforts are working.”
It exemplifies the problems that Meta has in ensuring its products are used responsibly. People are always going to find ways to get around the restrictions on filming, so it raises the questions of whether they’re acceptable to sell and wear in the first place.
Previously Meta had acted to disable video recording capabilities on smart specs that had been doctored to prevent the LED light from coming on during a photo or video capture in the first place.
