Your iPhone will soon split restaurant bills from a photo of the receipt

Trying to work out who owes what after a group dinner could soon become a lot less painful. Apple is preparing a Wallet feature for iOS 27 that will let iPhone users split a bill, simply by taking a photo of a receipt.

The tool will be built into Apple Wallet and Apple Cash, letting iPhone users photograph receipts and automatically generate payment requests. It was announced as part of Apple’s WWDC 2026 keynote and will arrive later this year as part of iOS 27.

The feature reportedly goes beyond simply dividing the total cost equally, and users will reportedly be able to assign individual items to different people before generating payment requests through Apple Cash. Those requests can then be sent directly through Wallet or Messages.

Apple Watch owners won’t be left out either. Payments will be able to be approved directly from Apple’s smartwatch, making the whole process even quicker.

There is a caveat – the feature relies on Apple Cash, Apple’s peer-to-peer payment service, which is currently only available in the US and Apple has yet not revealed plans to roll it out more widely.

The bill splitter isn’t the only Wallet upgrade coming in iOS 27, either. Apple is also working on a feature that lets users create their own digital passes by scanning things like cinema tickets, concert passes, gym memberships, and other physical cards that don’t already support Apple Wallet.

Apple looks set to continue turning your iPhone’s Wallet into much more than a place to store payment cards, and it could end up being one of iOS 27’s most useful additions.
