It’s been six years since Dyson launched the OG Corrale hair straighteners, so they are well due an upgrade and what better time to introduce one than when we are all talking about the Dyson CameraJet toothbrush! The Dyson Corrale CoolShine straightens are available now, cost $329.99/ £250 and promise super shiny locks.
How is the Dyson Corrale CoolShine different from other straighteners?
Unlike anything we have seen in the hair technology sphere before, the Dyson Corrale CoolShine have been designed with a removable cooling attachment. The new straighteners combine flexing plate technology from the Dyson Corrale straightener with this new Corrale CoolShine cooling attachment. Dyson says this next level styling, which uses both heat and cooling tech, can see us expect up to 29% less damage, thanks to the reduction in heat exposure. Even more exciting, compared to untreated hair, Dyson says hair styled with the new Dyson Corrale CoolShine will have 154% more shine!
How does the technology work?
Built with heat-extracting pipes within its cooling attachment to transfer excess heat away from the hair during styling, Dyson has utilised their thermal engineering knowhow seen in products including the Dyson Solarcycle light for the Corrale CoolShine. This heat pipe technology helps manage thermal performance to support long-lasting light quality and when used in the Corrale CoolShine this engineering principle equates to moving heat away from the hair after each pass of the straighteners, to help reduce residual heat exposure.
The heat-extracting copper pipes used in the Corrale CoolShine are sealed and contain a heat-transfer liquid, which cleverly helps draw excess heat away from your hair as you style it. By cooling the hair as you go, your style should last longer – Dyson claims hair can have 24 hours stay-put styling.
The flex in the plates is also an important design feature. Designed for increased control and fewer straightening passes needed, the plates have been engineered to gather and align strands as you style, which should result in precise styling and no need to redo sections. The flex in the Dyson plates adapting to hair as you style is very different from conventional straighteners with solid plates that apply even pressure.
Dyson Corrale CoolShine: In use
You won’t feel the need to hide the Dyson Corrale CoolShine straighteners away – they are a thing of beauty and incredibly well made. Ready to use in 15 seconds, they feel lightweight (285g with the cooling attachment) but not flimsy and are nice to hold. It’s important to note that unlike the original Corrale straighteners, they aren’t cordless but the design is more ergonomic and they are smaller and lighter.
The straighteners have four different buttons: 145°C, 165°C, 185°C and 210°C. My hair is long, very thick and coarse and I found the 185°C heat to be ideal for straightening with the 210°C useful for stubborn kinks or putting in a wave. People with thinner and better behaved hair will be able to use the lower temperature settings, which will also be useful for top-ups.
The Dyson Corrale CoolShine straights are a pleasure to use – no snagging at all, they just glide through the hair. My hair was left noticeably more shiny than it had previously looked. I felt that I achieved the glossy look I usually only get at the hairdressers. My hair felt silky but not flat and still had volume to it, which is my ideal. It did indeed stay straight for the whole day too, as per Dyson’s claims.
My only niggle is that with the pipes in place, I can’t get the hang of curling my hair with it but without it, I can curl fine. Personally, for waves and curls, I do prefer using a styler like the Dyson Airwap Co-anda2x or Shark Glam, rather than straighteners, but with the not inconsiderable £250 price point, I think this may irk people who use straighteners for both and don’t want to keep interchanging the attachment.
The Corrale CoolShine comes with a heat mat to protect your styling space and I love that like the Dyson Supersonic Travel it has universal voltage, making it perfect for travel.
